Aluminium Windows for Coastal Areas — Built to Withstand Salt and Sea

Living near the coast in India — whether in Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, or Odisha — is a privilege. But the marine environment is deeply hostile to most building materials, and windows are particularly vulnerable.

The Challenge of the Marine Environment

Coastal air carries fine salt particles that are highly corrosive. Standard window frames — mild steel, budget aluminium alloys, even poorly powder-coated aluminium — will suffer visible corrosion within months of exposure. The consequences range from ugly surface oxidation to structural failure over time.

Why Aluminium Is the Best Choice for Coastal Applications

Aluminium naturally forms a thin oxide layer that protects the metal from further oxidation. Unlike iron which forms rust that continues to corrode, aluminium's oxidation is self-limiting and protective. However, not all aluminium is equal for coastal applications.

Marine-grade aluminium alloys — particularly the 6063 series — offer excellent corrosion resistance. High-quality powder coating of minimum 60 to 80 microns thickness provides excellent coastal protection. Architectural-grade anodising of minimum 25 microns provides exceptional corrosion resistance for the most aggressive locations.

Hardware Selection

Stainless steel grade 316 hardware is essential for sea-facing applications. Avoid zinc die-cast hardware which corrodes rapidly in marine conditions. Sealed roller systems on sliding windows prevent salt ingress into the track mechanism.

These considerations are not optional luxuries for coastal homes — they are essential specifications that determine whether your window system lasts 5 years or 40 years.
